Across the Horizon : The Artist Curated Music Series Designed to Broaden the Landscape of Instrumental Music

Northern Spy Records and Bob Holmes, member of SUSS and host of the Ambient Country Podcast, have created Across the Horizon with the goal of emulating the kind of discovery that happens when artists sit down to chat about their influences. For Vo. 1 of the series, eight innovators from the wide landscape of instrumental music have been invited to act as curators, each selecting two other artists to submit original music alongside their own contributions. The result will be 24 tracks over 12 months of all new material not available anywhere else.

Subscribers will get all the tracks delivered to their inbox as they drop and culminate in a double vinyl album & risograph zine available exclusively to Bandcamp subscribers

We hope you will join us for the journey…..across the horizon

VOL. 1 – ARTIST / CURATORS

Mark Nelson / Pan American
Pan American is Mark Nelson, a guitarist and producer based in Evanston IL.who came to prominence in the late 1990’s fronting the guitar based ambient trio Labradford. His music has laid out a whole new path for artists inspired by his use of stringed instruments, loops and synths to create new worlds of sonic landscapes.

Luke Schneider
Luke Schneider is a pedal steel guitarist based in Nashville. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Schneider moved to Tennessee to attend college with dreams of becoming a record producer, but eventually established himself as an in-demand session and touring musician. Most recently, He has found his place in the landscape of New Age and pastoral Americana music.

Dave Harrington
Dave Harrington is a multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer and producer. Before moving to Los Angeles in 2019, Harrington spent more than a decade in his hometown of New York City working across many different musical communities from downtown improvisation to Brooklyn indie and jambands to warehouse techno, scoring independent films, and producing albums for other artists.

Marisa Anderson
Portland-based guitarist and composer Marisa Anderson has enjoyed a varied and eclectic career in instrumental guitar-driven music. Firmly rooted in tradition, her deeply original work applies elements of minimalism, drone and 20th century classical music to compositions and improvisations based on blues, jazz and gospel.

Stelth Ulvang
Maybe best known for the last 15 years as the pianist for the anthemic folk band, The Lumineers, Stelth Ulvang has continually reinvented himself, not only as a solo artist, but also as a member of the bootgaze psychedelic trio Heavy Gus. Together with his wife Dorota, Heavy Gus creates dreamy soundscapes that owe as much to their home in the high desert of Bishop, California as they do to surf pop and the legacy of bands like Mojave 3.

Walt McClements
Walt McClements is an accordionist and multi-instrumentalist based in Los Angeles. His compositions focus on processed accordion, creating patient and emotional meditations that nod to drone and ambient music. His latest record Rain on the Road, is a duo collaboration with the harpist Mary Lattimore.

David Moore
New York City pianist and composer David Moore sits at the vanguard of instrumental ambient music. David is the founder and leader of minimalist music ensemble Bing & Ruth, and over the course of multiple Bing & Ruth releases, he has explored the tender yet percussive qualities of the piano and the depths of the Farfisa organ, pairing them with everything from upright bass, woodwinds, and tape delays to create emotive and dynamic compositions.

William Tyler
William Tyler is a guitarist and composer based in the American South who has continually pushed against the limits of what is traditionally thought of in guitar centric instrumental music. Over a decade plus career he has released albums under his own name and collaborated with a wide variety of artists from Marisa Anderson to Kieren Hebdan, and has also done work scoring films and sound installations.
